President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged the youth to actively engage in agriculture, emphasizing its critical role in the nation’s economic advancement.

Speaking as the special guest on Tuesday March 17 2026 during the launch of the Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026 at the Black Star Square, he highlighted that the Agriculture sector remains a relevant and vital industry.

“For young people, agriculture is not a sector of the past. It is one of the frontiers of our future,” he said.

He observed that contemporary agriculture, in contrast to previous eras, necessitates a comprehensive understanding and expertise that encompasses engineering, data science, agronomy, and equipment management.

The President additionally encouraged investors and financial institutions to back the development of Agribusiness, particularly in this era where agriculture has advanced, incorporating technology.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of research institutions converting their discoveries into practical solutions that can enhance the livelihoods of farmers and contribute to the broader economy.

He commended the scientists from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for their remarkable success in wheat production, highlighting that their efforts resulted in impressive yields of four to five tonnes per hectare.

This milestone has the potential to significantly reduce the $400 million spent annually on wheat imports.
