Government has recalled all Diplomatic and Service Passports granted to government appointees and officials during the Akufo-Addo administration.

In a letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, the recall is to ensure proper use and administration of official travel documents in accordance with both national and international standards.

“This exercise aligns with the Government’s commitment to ensuring the proper use and administration of official travel documents by national and international standards.

The recall aims to prevent misuse, safeguard the country’s reputation, and maintain the integrity of our diplomatic engagements”, this was contained in a letter addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 14th.

The Office of the President has stipulated guidelines for effective recall of all Diplomatic and Service Passports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the sole authority to ensure compliance from individuals or groups in possession of such passports..

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has to first issue a public notice to individuals and groups having Diplomatic and Service Passports to return followed by giving a deadline for the passports to be returned which is on 24th January 2025. Lastly, the Ministry has to review all returned passports to ensure they align with the current eligibility criteria for issuance.

The call for its recall is borne out of concerns raised about the misuse of such passports. It is also to maintain Ghana’s standing in diplomatic circles.

The government assured the Ministry of its support should there be any misunderstanding or issues that may arise out of this exercise.

“Do not hesitate to contact my office for any further clarification or assistance you may need in executing this important exercise,” the letter from the Office of the President stated.

Affected individuals and groups are urged to comply with the directive to avoid any inconveniences
