The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has halted the processing of any significant requests from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) until the school adheres to its order over the term of Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong.
GTEC notified the UCC Registrar in a letter dated Monday, September 22, 2025, that the decision was compelled by a High Court injunction that had prevented the university’s Governing Council from making any decisions regarding Prof. Boampong’s appointment since October 8, 2024.
Notwithstanding this order, GTEC observed that Prof. Boampong had continued to serve in his position beyond the mandated retirement age.
The Commission has therefore declared a suspension of processing requests from UCC concerning accreditation, salaries, GETFund support, book and research allowances, post-retirement contracts, financial clearance for recruitment, and other associated matters.
The directive by GTEC if not adhered to according to the letter would compel the Commission to enforce regulations until it receives evidence of complete compliance.
In a cautionary move by GTEC, UCC has been essentially removed from the list of public institutions on the GTEC website, meaning that it does not exist.
Prof. Boampong was directed by GTEC to resign from his position last week, as a result of his tenure in office exceeding the mandatory retirement age of 60.
GTEC also cited the University of Cape Coast Statutes (2016), which stipulate that the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure is four years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional three years, as long as the statutory retirement age is not exceeded.
In the meantime, GTEC has appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, to be the Acting VC.
