As today, November 6 happens to be the Grand Finale of the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) preparations are under way for what is expected to be one of the most competitive academic competitions in history.
The three all-boys schools, Mfantsipim (BOTWE), Opoku Ware (OWASS), and St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) will clash in this crucial encounter. Each school has a historical background, and a strong drive to succeed at the national level.
This year’s Grand Finale is expected to take place at the School Graduate Studies (SGS) Auditorium, University of Cape Coast, in the Central Region of Ghana. The event promises to be a compelling and intense one, showcasing the intellectual prowess of each school as participants strive to take home the prestigious trophy and the bragging rights.
Mfantsipim School – Defending Champions
Mfantsipim School are the defending Champions in this year’s tournament having won the 2024 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz. They booked a slot in the finals after defeating GSTS and Mankranso SHS in an epic semi-finals encounter.
BOTWE have won the NSMQ trophy three times and this year marks a significant milestone for the school should they successfully emerge winners making it four for them.
The all-boys school from Cape Coast made history in 1999 when they won the NSMQ for the first time. They repeated their success in 2014 and 2024, eventually taking home the national crown.
However, they were not successful in some competitions as they took the runner-up positions in 2000 and 2016.
They approach the grand finals not just as favorites but also as a squad with the composure and pedigree to destroy any opponent—a menace that Opoku Ware and St. Augustine’s, their rivals, are all too familiar with. They are now only one win away from winning their fourth national championship.
Opoku Ware School — A Done Deal For 3rd Trophy Or A Better Luck For Subsequent Events
Opoku Ware School (OWASS), the Ashanti Region based school has been tipped as the next big thing in the ongoing competition after booking a well-deserved slot in the finals. Their win over St. Peter’s SHS and Achimota School was not sheer luck but a real display of determination, hardwork and perseverance. They are looking forward to winning their third trophy after taking their first National title in 1997 and 2002.
With multiple runner-up finishes, OWASS is no stranger to the competition. As the most formidable challenger in the history of the National Science and Maths Quiz, OWASS has finished in the runner-up place on five separate occasions (in 1995, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2016, 2020, and 2023).
Their comeback in recent years has been nothing short of extraordinary. Following their triumph as Regional Champions in 2025, OWASS surged through the national stages with impressive performances, demonstrating their strength as a formidable contender ready to take on any opponent. With momentum on their side, OWASS is poised to write a remarkable comeback story.
St. Augustine’s College — The Saints Hungry For A Third Glory
St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) is poised to claim their third trophy after a remarkable comeback in the semi-finals, where they triumphed over Pope John SHS, who were initially in the lead. It seems fate has a unique way of charting our paths.
AUGUSCO won their first title in 2007 and subsequently grabbed their second in 2019 after beating St. Peter’s SHS and PRESEC, Legon.
Who Wins The Coveted Trophy And The Bragging Rights?
