
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially declared that students from both public and private schools would undertake the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from Wednesday, June 11 to June 18.
A statement from the Council reveals that 603,328 applicants from 20,395 schools will participate in this year’s examinations, reflecting a 5.99 percent rise compared to 2024 figure of 569,236. 297,250 are males while 306,078 are females.
WAEC documented 1,661 entries from private candidates, consisting of 858 males and 803 females, indicating a 19.49% increase compared to the 2024 private entrance total of 1,390.
The assessment for school candidates will be conducted at 2,237 centers countrywide. I
In contrast, fifteen (15) centers, primarily situated in regional capitals, have been allocated for private candidates.
WAEC stressed that, similar to the 2024 examination, school candidates and specific private candidates will be examined based on the new core curriculum, but others will be evaluated using the old syllabus
The Council emphasized that the old syllabus will no longer be used to evaluate private candidates after 2025.
According to the Examination Body, reasonable adjustments have been implemented to make the examinations accessible to students with special needs and that no child will be sidelined.
