The Parliament of Ghana has passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, popularly known as Anti-LGBTQ Bill despite opposition from the minority.

The anti-gay bill passed on Friday, May 29, now includes some revisions that provide protection for certain groups from sanctions under the law.

The bill which criminalizes LGTBQ related activities includes an exemption for those who offer legal advice or representation to individuals identified as LGBTQ, ensuring they will not face prosecution.

The legislation also provides an exemption for journalists and media organizations that cover LGBTQ-related topics in the course of their professional duties.

Medical professionals, including those providing surgical, psychological, and counseling services to LGBTQ individuals, remain unaffected by the sanctions.

The new changes in the bill made members of the New Patriotic Party in parliament to kick against it.

They argue that the updated version of the bill presents a distinct viewpoint, highlighting that the earlier submission to then President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his assentl indicated it was not suitable for its intended purpose.

Despite the objections raised, Parliament moved forward with the passage of the bill.
