The Supreme has overruled a bench warrant which implicated Ghanaian-US based journalist, Kevin Ekow Baidoo Taylor in a 4-1 decision.
The bench warrant was issued by a High Court Judge, Justice Eric Kyei Baffour in 2020 after Kevin Taylor disparaging comments about him during one of his online shows dubbed With All Due Respect.
In that particular video, Kevin Taylor stated that the promotion of Justice Eric Kyei Baffour to the Appeals Court was as a result of doing the bidding of the government at the time by prosecuting former National Communications Authority (NCA) board members for embezzling $4 million.
Responding to the accusations leveled against him, Justice Baffour indicated that Kevin Taylor has serious allegations that must be substantiated with tangible proof.
The warrant, which was issued on January 16th 2020, sought for Taylor’s extradition to Ghana to appear before the court and answer questions on why he should not be jailed for inciting the public against the judiciary.
Justice Kyei-Baffour characterized Taylor’s remarks as disgusting and a clear assault on the judiciary, aimed at provoking public discontent against the court.
However, the Apex Court in its verdict today, determined that the bench warrant was unlawful and that Justice Kyei Baffour exceeded the limits of judicial discretion.
