Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, has assured a reduction in data pricing from mobile network companies — MTN, Telecel, AT effective July 1.
Addressing the public at a press briefing held today June 10, the Sector Minister explained that the move is to enhance affordable data for consumers across the country.
Following a fruitful negotiation with the CEOs of the three main network operators, the minister dropped hints that a deal had been struck to provide customers with cheap data.
“I am pleased to announce that my engagement with the CEOs have yielded a positive result and effective and some measures will be put in place effective July 1”, he said during his engagement with the media in Accra.
“All the three major networks will effect a 10% increase in data allocation across their bundle offerings. Also, some high-volume packages will experience even more significant upgrades.”
“AirtelTigo’s widely-used 400-cedis bundle will now offer 236 GB, an increase from the previous 194GB, while Telecel’s comparable bundle will rise from 90GB to 250GB. In a significant victory for consumers, MTN will reinstate its former 399-cedi bundle, which offers 214GB, supplanting the existing 350-cedi bundle that provides merely 92.88GB.”
The updated data packages follow a comprehensive discussion between the Telcos and the Ministry aimed at identifying optimal strategies to provide consumers with affordable but quality services.
The Minister for Communication is very certain that the forthcoming data packages would support the government’s digitization agenda while delivering favorable options to customers.
