A horrific incident that took place at Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso in the Ashanti region has left a male teacher blind in one eye after a student stabbed him.
According to reports, Ishmael Famous, confronted the student who was roaming about during classes hours. He later asked the student (name withheld) to enter the classroom but he was stabbed in the left eye. The incident is said to have happened on November 18, 2024.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the police to take legal action against the perpetrator of the crime.
Also, the Association has asserted that the affected teacher deserves a Workmen’s Compensation since Ishmael Famous got stabbed while performing his duty.
“The law demands that if somebody is working in his line of duty, and something happens to him, the law provides that he should be compensated,” GNAT general secretary, Thomas Musah indicates.
“The law gives you what we call the Workmen’s Compensation,” he said.
Thomas Musah threatened that failure of duty bearers to take action on the matter would compel Teachers to withdraw their services when school resumes after the Christmas break. He made emphasis on the severity of the issue stressing that the said teacher would be using only one eye for the rest of his life.
Mr. Musah further stated that Ishmael’s career is in limbo because “Looking at the profession, you need your eyes to work with” and has called for the Police and the Ghana Education Service GES to act responsibly on such a delicate matter.
