The Government of Ghana has reassured residents of Greater Kumasi that recent power outages will soon become a thing of the past, as critical sub-transmission infrastructure upgrades are scheduled for completion by June 5, 2026.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed that the major power network upgrade project across Greater Kumasi and surrounding areas is on track nearing completion, with officials stating the intervention will significantly improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply .
Technical Interventions Underway
According to ECG officials, the upgrade is specifically designed to improve:
The project includes the installation of new transformers and upgrades to sub-transmission infrastructure that will serve multiple communities including Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua, and Bekwai .
Additional Capacity Coming to Ashanti Region
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has outlined that the Kumasi area will receive an additional 47 megawatts of power, with plans to bring onboard a minimum of 120 megawatts by next week
Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, stated: “As we keep assuring the people of Kumasi, just as we have done for the last few months where the power has been very stable, we continue to assure them of stable power supply” .
Long-Term Energy Vision for Kumasi
Energy Minister Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor has hinted at ambitious plans to transform Kumasi into a major power generation hub. The minister indicated that multiple power plants expected to be operational in coming years could contribute up to 500 megawatts of electricity from the region, further strengthening Ghana’s energy security .
Beyond generating sufficient power, the minister emphasized: “We need to effectively transmit and distribute it to consumers” .
Recent Progress in Power Supply
The government’s commitment to addressing energy challenges builds on previous interventions, including:
37 new transformers commissioned by ECG in May 2026 to eradicate low voltage and phase outages
145MVA transformer installation replacing an older 66MVA unit with more than double the capacity.
Ghana now exporting excess electricity to neighboring countries, indicating supply stabilization.
President Mahama’s Commitment
The John Dramani Mahama-led government has made stabilizing and enhancing power supply in Kumasi and surrounding communities a priority, with engineers working around the clock to resolve challenges and guarantee reliable power for both residential and industrial users .
Minister Jinapor reaffirmed: “We are working around the clock to resolve these challenges and guarantee a reliable power supply. The power supply situation has since stabilised” .
What Residents Should Expect
Starting June 5, Greater Kumasi residents should experience:
- More consistent electricity supply with fewer interruptions
- Improved voltage quality eliminating flickering lights
- Stable power for businesses and households
- Enhanced network capacity to support regional growth
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as work continues to improve power generation and transmission within the energy sector, with the government fully committed to ensuring uninterrupted power supply for the Ashanti Region.
