Elon Musk likely to buy Liverpool

Tech enthusiast and world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has shown interest in taking over the ownership of the English Premier League side, Liverpool football club, according to a statement by his father, Errol Musk.

In a discussion on Times Radio, Errol Musk confirmed rumors about his son’s interest. Elon Musk has earlier revealed his desire to invest in the Reds.

When questioned whether Elon Musk wants to buy Liverpool fc, Errol refrained from commenting on it but revealed the desire by Elon Musk to have a stake in the club’s ownership. Disclosing more information, according to him, could raise the price tag.

Errol Musk emphasized the family’s connection to the city which explained the deep interest by his son. He stated that his family had some relatives in Liverpool and Elon Musk’s grandmother was born in the city.

According to him, they were fortunate to know quite a lot of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family, making them more attached to the club.

However, this is not the first time Elon Musk has revealed his intentions of owning a football club. He jokingly tweeted in 2022 of buying Manchester United but later came to clarify it was a passing comment and nothing serious.

Liverpool is currently owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG). The Group purchased the club in 2010 for $300 million. The current value of the football club according to Forbes is estimated to be $4.3 billion.

The FSG group owns Red Box Sox and as well have a majority stake in the New England Sports Network. The group has been criticized by Liverpool fans recently over what they described as inadequate investment in the team. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has seen thriving businesses collapse and it was the same with the FSG group which had to sell a minority stake to investment firm Dynasty Equity in September 2023 to ease down the financial pressure facing the Group.

The funds generated were used to invest in Anfield stadium, pay off debts and repurchase Melwood training ground for the women’s team.

John W. Henry, the principal owner of FSG has denied rumors of a possible sale of Liverpool. According to him, LFC is open for investors to put resources together and give the team the needed support financially.

With an Estimated net worth of $343 billion, Musk is capable of purchasing Liverpool football club with its current value of about $4.3 billion which only represents a negligible fraction of his fortune.
