Hundreds of shops at the Accra Central Business market, popularly known as Kantamanto has been destroyed by a ravaging fire on January 2, 2025.
The cause of the fire is not known at the moment but it is believed the fire started at around 1:00 am. Authorities are closely working to determine what brought about the fire and assess the full extent of the damage caused.
About thirteen fire tenders from Makola, Greater Accra Regional Headquarters, National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, Parliament House, Trade Fair, Dansoman, Abelenkpe and Kasapreko, Tema Regional HQ, Madina, and Legon were deployed to help fight the fire. They successfully battled the inferno throughout the morning and brought it under control.
In the course of fighting the fire, the assistance of the Electricity Company of Ghana was sought to cut power supply in order to help them fight the inferno that has destroyed hundreds of shops.
The outbreak of the fire at Kantamanto Market has destroyed properties which run into millions of cedis and it is likely the damage caused by the fire will have a significant impact on local businesses.
