The family of the late Emmanuel Asamoah, a resident of Sankore in the Ahafo Region’s Asunafo South Municipality, is demanding a comprehensive inquiry into the events leading up to his arrest, conviction, sentence, and death—which is said to have happened within a week.
Why Was He Arrested?
Reliable evidence from close friends and family members indicates that Emmanuel Asamoah was charged with harming someone in 2025. But according to reports, he stayed out of the neighborhood for about a year, which made it difficult for the police to capture him.
According to reports, on Sunday, May 31, 2026, he returned to Sankore and was taken into custody by police in what witnesses called a spectacular operation. He was detained at Goaso police station after his arrest.
Circumstances Leading To His Death
Family members allege that Emmanuel often complained of health issues while in police custody, purportedly as a consequence of how he was treated during the arrest. They claim that despite his worsening health, his compalints were ignored.
Emmanuel was allegedly brought before the Goaso Circuit Court on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, and given a four-year jail term as family members attempted to gain his release on bail. The family claimed he lacked access to legal counsel at the time and that the court procedures occurred without their awareness.
On Thursday, June 4, 2026, he was sent to Sunyani Prisons after being found guilty. Family members were told he was ill and sleeping when they came to see him.
But as word spread that Emmanuel had passed away either on Friday, June 5, or Saturday, June 6, 2026, worries grew. On Sunday, June 7, relatives allegedly went to the jail to confirm the allegation and were told that he had actually died and that his corpse had been placed in a mortuary.
Family Accuses Police
Although no official medical report has yet been produced to identify the precise reason, preliminary reports presented by the family indicate that internal bleeding and trauma may have led to his death.
There are two children of the late Emmanuel Asamoah. In addition to calling on human rights groups, attorneys, and pertinent governmental agencies to assist in ensuring that justice is done, his family, friends, and supporters are calling for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
