Residents and businesses in several parts of Accra woke up to another round of planned power outages on Monday, June 2, 2026, after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) announced maintenance exercises aimed at strengthening the power distribution network.
The outages, which began in the morning and are expected to last several hours, are part of routine and emergency maintenance works in the Accra East and Accra West operational areas.
Affected Areas (Accra East – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM)
According to ECG, the following communities are impacted:
• Old Ashongman
• Agbogba
• Anglican School Park
• Wisconsin Hotel
• Academic City
• Haatso DVLA
• Parts of Abelemkpe
• Dzorwulu
• Dimples
• School for the Deaf
• Surrounding areas
Additional maintenance is also underway in parts of the Accra West Region during similar hours.
Why the maintenance?
ECG says the exercise is necessary to upgrade infrastructure, replace faulty equipment, and improve overall reliability. Engineers are working to reduce future faults and deliver better long-term service to customers.
Businesses and Residents React
While many understand the need for maintenance, the frequent interruptions continue to frustrate households, schools, and small businesses that rely on stable power. Social media platforms have been buzzing with complaints about productivity losses, spoiled food, and the extra cost of running generators.
Not a Return to Nationwide Dumsor
ECG has emphasized that these are scheduled, localized outages for network improvement, not part of a broader load-shedding exercise or national power crisis. Similar maintenance works are also ongoing in other regions (including Ashanti and Tema) as part of a wider effort to stabilize supply this week (June 1–7).
The Bigger Challenge
Power reliability remains a persistent headache in Ghana, especially for businesses and families. While planned maintenance is essential for long-term upgrades, repeated disruptions highlight the urgent need for more robust investment in the energy sector, faster project execution, and better communication from utilities.
Affected customers are advised to stay updated via ECG’s official channels and prepare accordingly. Restoration is expected once the maintenance in each area is completed.
