Government spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced that the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, is scheduled for high-level bilateral discussions with officials from the United States.
The forthcoming interaction comes at the backdrop of intensified assessment of extradition as a crucial mechanism in Ghana-U.S. legal and diplomatic ties, especially after the successful repatriation of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.
Sedina was extradited to Ghana on Tuesday, June 9th.
Sedina’s homecoming comes as good news to many after several years of legal tussle and persistent diplomatic zeal by officials to get her back to begin her sentence after she was convicted.
As she landed, personnel from the Police and Prisons Service intercepted her.
Authorities are currently engaged in the administrative and legal procedures required to facilitate the commencement of her sentence.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated in a Facebook post that the government intends to leverage the forthcoming meeting between the Attorney-General and representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice to strengthen bilateral cooperation on extradition and efficiently address all pending requests between the two nations.
The discussions are expected to tackle several notable cases that have garnered significant public attention.
Ghana’s ongoing request for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta stands out as a significant development.
The former minister remains the subject of an ongoing investigation by state authorities. The Mahama-led administration has affirmed its commitment to exploring all legal avenues to facilitate his return should extradition be required.
The bilateral discussions will also touch on some mutual demands from the United States.
U.S. officials are reportedly seeking the extradition of additional individuals connected to various criminal investigations and prosecutions, including a suspect identified as Frederick Kumi alias Abu Trica.
