The Ghana Police Service has detained Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, the newly appointed leader of Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, along with two additional suspects. This action is linked to the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo.

On June 22, 2026, Akofena voluntarily turned himself in at the Regional Police Headquarters and was later sent to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to aid in the ongoing investigations.

Investigations into the shooting event that occurred on June 21 continue, and the three suspects are still in police custody. They are anticipated to make a court appearance on June 23, 2026.

As per a statement released by the family, the former lawmaker sustained injuries during an altercation with the bodyguards of Kwadwo Safo Akofena 1. This incident arose while she was in the process of delivering an injunction letter, which led to a standoff between the involved parties.

The family, in their statement released on Monday, June 22nd, indicated that while the founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission granted Israel Safo full ownership rights of the church and other significant businesses in 2017, those rights were revoked in 2024.

The statement further highlighted that the decision to revoke the mandate was deemed necessary upon the realization that the individual in question was diverging from the principles and direction of the church.

The family claimed that Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo, prior to his passing, designated Adwoa Safo as the head of the family and established a succession plan that barred Akofena 1 from assuming any leadership position.

The statement emphasized that it does not acknowledge any installation as this goes against the wishes of the late founder.

At the time of writing, there has been no counterstatement from Israel Safo in response to the family’s statement.
