The taxi driver who picked up the University of Cape Coast (UCC) student whose untimely death has shocked the university community,  has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

According to the police, 39-year-old Michael Mensah remains a key suspect in the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu and has been taken into custody. 

Sustained intelligence-driven operations led to the suspect’s arrest at the Pedu Lorry Station, Cape Coast, on 15th June 2026  by the IGP’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team.

From what we can tell so far, the deceased was taken from Ayensu Plaza in the UCC hostel enclave to Hutchland Beach by a suspect who identifies himself as a teacher and who also works as a driver. This incident occurred on June 11, 2026.

Innocentia Avinu, a student of the University was declared missing on June 11th and was last seen at the Ayensu Plaza hostel located on UCC campus.

The 20-year-old Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource Management) student reportedly informed her roommate that she was going to meet someone and would be back shortly.

Her family and friends sought public assistance in their efforts to find their cherished loved one. However, she was discovered deceased at the Hatchland Beach Resort near the university on the 12th of June.
